Richard "Dick" Wiley Cullen (1941–2008)

A life bridging the Cold War naval era and the modern digital age.

Richard Cullen was a singular case study in the evolution of the American technical class. Whether routing emergency radio traffic via the Army MARS network, planning strategic space assets for USSPACECOM, or adjudicating animal husbandry standards, he operated as a node of high-fidelity information transfer.

Naval & Maritime

Enlisting in 1959, Richard served during the height of the Cold War. His expertise led him to a civilian role (1966–1969) aboard the USNS Wheeling (TAGM-8).

As a technical specialist and radio operator (WB6ZDC/MM), he was instrumental in tracking ballistic missile tests and operating drone control systems in the Pacific Missile Range.

USSPACECOM

The pinnacle of his professional career was his tenure with the United States Space Command.

Working within the J5R (Plans & Requirements) directorate, he helped architect the future of America's space assets, applying rigorous engineering standards to strategic defense planning.

Blarney Manx & The CFA

Richard applied his engineering rigor to the biology of the Manx breed. Along with his wife Renee, he operated Blarney Manx.

He achieved the rare and prestigious rank of Master Clerk Instructor (MCI) with the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA). In this role, he was responsible for certifying the accuracy of show records and training the next generation of officials, ensuring that the data integrity of the sport matched his professional standards.

Army MARS Legacy

As AAAHD0 (and briefly AAM8HDO), Richard was a pillar of the Army Military Affiliate Radio System.

  • The Digital Transition: He architected the "Online MARSGRAM" system, allowing the public to send messages via the web that were converted to RTTY for transmission.
  • Historian: He served as the unofficial historian for Region 8, preserving the legacy of military auxiliary comms.

"The station is now silent, the key is at rest, but the signal he generated continues to propagate."
